Avatrombopag

Avatrombopag is an oral medication used to treat thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts) in adults with chronic liver disease who are scheduled to undergo a medical or dental procedure. It works by increasing the production of platelets in the body and helping to prevent bleeding complications during a procedure. Avatrombopag is not a substitute for platelet transfusions, but it can reduce the need for them. It is available as a tablet and is usually taken once daily for up to five days before a medical or dental procedure.

Avatrombopag, sold under the brand name Doptelet, is a medication used to treat two specific conditions related to low platelet count:

  • Thrombocytopenia associated with chronic liver disease (CLD) in adults: This refers to a condition where individuals with chronic liver disease have a low number of platelets, which are blood cells essential for clotting and preventing excessive bleeding. Avatrombopag is used in adults with CLD who are scheduled for a planned medical or dental procedure to help prevent bleeding complications by increasing their platelet count.
  • Chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adults: This is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelets, leading to a low platelet count and an increased risk of bleeding. Avatrombopag is used in adults with ITP who have not responded well to other treatments.

Avatrombopag belongs to a class of medications called thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonists. It works by mimicking the natural compound called thrombopoietin, which stimulates the production of platelets in the bone marrow. By stimulating the TPO receptor, Avatrombopag increases the production of platelets, thereby addressing the underlying cause of low platelet count in these specific conditions.

Here's a summary of Avatrombopag's key points:

  • Conditions it treats: Thrombocytopenia in adults with chronic liver disease (before surgery) and chronic ITP (when other treatments fail).
  • Mechanism of action: Mimics thrombopoietin to stimulate platelet production.
  • Dosage form: Taken as a tablet by mouth, typically once daily with food.
  • Important note: Avatrombopag does not cure either CLD or ITP, but it helps manage the platelet count to reduce bleeding risks.
