Candocuronium iodide is a neuromuscular blocking agent, also known as a skeletal muscle relaxant. It belongs to a class of drugs called aminosteroids.
It works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that nerves use to signal muscles to contract. This causes temporary paralysis of the muscles, which can be useful during surgery or other procedures that require muscle relaxation.
Candocuronium iodide was never widely used due to some limitations, including:
- Cardiovascular effects: It can cause tachycardia (fast heart rate), which is not ideal for some patients.
- Limited availability: It was never widely marketed or commercially available.
