Desmopressin

Desmopressin, also known by the brand name DDAVP, is a synthetic form of a hormone produced naturally in the body. It is used to treat several conditions, including diabetes insipidus, bedwetting, and von Willebrand disease. It is also used to reduce bleeding during certain medical procedures, such as surgery or dental work. Desmopressin works by increasing the amount of certain proteins in the blood, which helps to stop bleeding. It can be taken as a pill, nasal spray, or injection.

Desmopressin is a medication that acts like a natural hormone in your body called vasopressin. Vasopressin helps your kidneys control the amount of water in your body. Desmopressin is used to treat a condition called diabetes insipidus, which causes your body to make too much urine. It is also used to treat bedwetting in children at night.

Desmopressin comes in different forms, including a tablet, a liquid that you take by mouth, a nasal spray, and a medication that is injected into a vein. The way you take desmopressin will depend on the condition you are being treated for.

Here are some of the key things to know about desmopressin:

  • It is a prescription medication, so you will need to see your doctor to get it.
  • It is generally safe and effective for most people.
  • The most common side effects of desmopressin are headache, stomach cramps, and a runny or stuffy nose.
  • It is important to drink plenty of fluids while you are taking desmopressin, but you should avoid drinking too much fluid before bedtime if you are taking it for bedwetting.
  • You should not take desmopressin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have certain medical conditions, such as heart failure or kidney disease.
