Detomidine

Detomidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used as an equine sedative and tranquilizer. It has a rapid onset of action and is commonly used in combination with other drugs such as butorphanol, xylazine and acepromazine, to provide a balanced level of sedation. Detomidine is often used during medical and dental procedures, as well as during transport. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly, and its effects last up to 90 minutes.

Detomidine is a prescription medication used by veterinarians as a sedative and pain reliever primarily for horses . It is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, which means it works by mimicking the effects of epinephrine (adrenaline) in the body. This helps to reduce the activity of the nervous system, leading to sedation and pain relief.

Detomidine is typically administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) and is available under several brand names, including Dormosedan. It is important to note that detomidine is only approved for use in horses and should not be administered to other animals.
