Diltiazem

Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker medication used to treat high blood pressure and certain types of chest pain (angina). It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor. Diltiazem works by inhibiting the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels, which relaxes the blood vessels and allows blood to flow more easily, reducing pressure and improving blood flow. It also slows down the electrical signal that causes the heart to beat, reducing the number of heartbeats per minute and reducing the heart's workload. Common side effects of diltiazem include headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, constipation and swelling of the ankles and feet. More serious side effects include low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and fainting.

Diltiazem is a medication classified as a calcium channel blocker. It's primarily used to treat two main conditions:

  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Diltiazem helps relax the muscles in blood vessel walls, allowing the vessels to widen. This reduces blood pressure by allowing blood to flow more easily throughout the body.
  • Angina (Chest Pain): Angina occurs when the heart muscle doesn't receive enough oxygen-rich blood. Diltiazem helps by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow to the heart, reducing chest pain.

Here's a breakdown of Diltiazem's key points:

  • Type of Drug: Calcium Channel Blocker
  • Function: Relaxes blood vessel walls, lowers blood pressure, improves blood flow to the heart
  • Uses: Treats high blood pressure, angina (chest pain)
  • Brand Names: Diltiazem CD, Diltiazem XR, DTIAzem (various brands available)

How it Works: Calcium channels are tiny openings in the membranes of heart and blood vessel muscle cells. Calcium ions entering these channels cause the muscles to contract. Diltiazem blocks some of the calcium from entering, leading to relaxation of the muscles. This relaxation, in turn, lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Important Considerations:

  • Dosage and Duration: It's crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely regarding the dosage and duration of Diltiazem treatment.
  • Potential Side Effects: Diltiazem can cause side effects, including dizziness, headache, fatigue, constipation, and ankle swelling.
  • Drug Interactions: Diltiazem can interact with other medications. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
