Hyper immune rabies serum

Hyperimmune rabies serum (H RIG), also known as antirabies serum, is a medication used to prevent rabies infection after exposure.

It is made from the blood of horses or humans that have been vaccinated against rabies and contains antibodies that can neutralize the rabies virus. HRIG is used along with rabies vaccine as part of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after a potential exposure to rabies.

Here's a summary of key points about Hyperimmune rabies serum:

  • Use: Provides passive immunity against rabies after exposure
  • Source: Made from the blood of horses or humans vaccinated against rabies
  • Contains: Antibodies that can neutralize the rabies virus
  • Used with: Rabies vaccine as part of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)

It is important to note that HRIG should be given as soon as possible after exposure to rabies, ideally within 24 hours. It is typically given as a single injection into a vein or muscle.
