Mangafodipir

Mangafodipir (tradenames Teslascan, Teslascan-R) is a manganese-based contrast agent used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. It works by increasing the intensity of the MRI signal from areas of the body that contain manganese. This helps to increase the visibility and contrast of these areas on the MRI scan. It is used to diagnose a variety of conditions, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors, and vascular malformations. It can also be used to assess damage to the liver from cirrhosis, as well as to monitor the effectiveness of treatments such as chemotherapy. Mangafodipir is generally administered intravenously and can cause side effects such as nausea, headache, and dizziness.

Mangafodipir was previously used as a medical substance but its status has changed:

  • Previous Use: It functioned as a contrast agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), specifically for the liver and pancreas.
  • Current Status:
    • Discontinued: Mangafodipir, marketed under the brand name Teslascan, was withdrawn from the market due to safety concerns.
      • The FDA removed it from the Drug Product List in 2003, and the withdrawal occurred in the European market by 2012.

Reasons for withdrawal:

  • Potential side effects: Research indicated a possibility of neurological complications, including movement disorders, in some patients.

Alternative contrast agents: Safer and more advanced contrast agents have replaced Mangafodipir for MRI procedures.

Current research:

While Mangafodipir is no longer used in clinical practice, research is ongoing to explore its potential benefits in other areas:

  • Chemotherapy adjunct: Studies suggest Mangafodipir might offer protective effects against side effects of some chemotherapy drugs.
  • Other applications: Research is being conducted to investigate its potential use in conditions like myocardial infarction and multiple sclerosis.

Important Note:

  • Do not use Mangafodipir: Due to safety concerns, Mangafodipir is not available for medical use.
  • Consult a healthcare professional: If you have any questions or require information about MRI contrast agents, it is crucial to consult with a doctor or qualified healthcare provider.
