Moxestrol

Moxestrol (also known by the brand name Prochieve) is a progesterone-only pill used for contraception. It works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary and thickening the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus. It also helps to maintain a regular menstrual cycle, reduce the risk of ectopic pregnancies, and possibly reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. Moxestrol is available in tablet form and is taken orally once a day at the same time each day.

Moxestrol is a synthetic estrogen medication that was previously prescribed for certain hormonal conditions in women. However, its use has become increasingly uncommon due to the following reasons:

  • Limited applications: Moxestrol was primarily used to treat menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
  • Alternative options: More effective and well-tolerated medications, such as other forms of estrogen or selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), are now the preferred choices for managing menopausal symptoms.
  • Potential side effects: Similar to other estrogens, moxestrol may be associated with an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and certain cancers, particularly when used long-term.

Therefore:

  • Not widely used: Moxestrol is no longer a common medication for menopausal symptoms due to the availability of safer and more efficacious alternatives.
  • Consult a doctor: If you are experiencing menopausal symptoms, a healthcare professional can recommend the most appropriate course of treatment based on your individual needs and medical history.
