Ozanimod

Ozanimod (Zeposia) is a medication used to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). It is a sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator that works by decreasing the activity of certain cells that cause inflammation in the body. Ozanimod blocks certain receptors on white blood cells that are involved in inflammation, thereby reducing the number of cells that reach the brain and spinal cord to cause inflammation and tissue damage. Ozanimod can help reduce the frequency of relapses and delay disability progression in people with MS.

Ozanimod is a medication used to treat two conditions:

  • Relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS): This includes clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system.
  • Moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC): This is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon.

Ozanimod works by affecting the immune system. It's classified as a sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor (S1PR) modulator. Here's a simplified breakdown of how it works:

  • Normally, immune system cells like lymphocytes travel throughout the body.
  • Ozanimod keeps these cells in the lymph nodes, which are organs of the immune system.
  • By preventing them from reaching areas of inflammation, it helps reduce inflammation in conditions like MS and UC.

Ozanimod is sold under the brand name Zeposia and is available as a capsule taken orally once daily.

Here are some additional things to know about Ozanimod:

  • Common side effects: These can include headache, fatigue, nausea, and changes in heart rate or blood pressure.
  • It's important to talk to your doctor about any medications you're taking before starting Ozanimod, as there can be interactions.
  • Ozanimod can affect pregnancy and is not recommended for pregnant women. Women who are breastfeeding should also avoid taking Ozanimod.
