Pirenzepine

Pirenzepine is a centrally-acting anticholinergic drug that is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers. It works by blocking the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is responsible for stimulating the production of stomach acid. Pirenzepine is also used to reduce spasms of the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, it has been used to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, as well as to treat stomach ulcers caused by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

Pirenzepine, also known by the brand name Gastrozepin, is a medication used to treat peptic ulcers, including duodenal ulcers and stomach ulcers.

Here's a breakdown of how Pirenzepine works:

  • Type of drug: Pirenzepine belongs to a class of drugs called muscarinic receptor antagonists.
  • Mechanism of action: It works by blocking the action of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the stomach. Acetylcholine normally stimulates the stomach to produce acid and contract muscles. By blocking acetylcholine, Pirenzepine reduces stomach acid secretion and muscle spasms, promoting ulcer healing and reducing discomfort.
  • Benefits: Pirenzepine is considered a more selective medication compared to older anticholinergic drugs. This means it targets specific receptors (M1) that are more involved in acid secretion with fewer side effects on other bodily functions.

Some key points to remember about Pirenzepine:

  • Usages: It's primarily used to treat peptic ulcers and may also help with nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness.
  • Side effects: While generally well-tolerated, dry mouth and blurred vision are the most common side effects at effective doses.
  • Comparison to other medications: Pirenzepine can be used alone or in combination with other medications like antacids or histamine blockers for better ulcer management.
