Propanol

Propanol is an organic compound with the molecular formula C3H8O. It is more commonly known as propyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, and is a colorless, flammable liquid with a slightly sweet odor and taste. It is commonly used as a solvent, antiseptic, and in the manufacture of certain chemicals. Propanol can also be used as a fuel in some applications, and is the main component of rubbing alcohol.

There are actually two main types of propanol: 1-propanol and 2-propanol (isopropyl alcohol).

  • 1-Propanol, also called n-propanol or propyl alcohol, is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is used in a variety of industrial applications, but it is not a medical substance. In fact, it can be harmful if ingested or inhaled.

2-Propanol, also called isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol, is a common household product that is used as a disinfectant. It is also used in some medical procedures, such as cleaning wounds or injecting medications. 2-Propanol should not be ingested and can be toxic if swallowed in large amounts.
