Rasburicase

Rasburicase (trade name Fasturtec) is a recombinant urate oxidase enzyme used to treat high levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) that can occur in certain conditions, such as leukemia and cancer chemotherapy. It is administered intravenously (through a vein). It works by breaking down uric acid in the blood and converting it to a more soluble form, allowing it to be excreted in the urine. Rasburicase can help prevent or minimize the risk of kidney damage and other complications associated with high levels of uric acid.

Rasburicase, sold under the brand name Elitek, is a medication used to treat a specific condition called tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) [1, 2].

Here's a breakdown of TLS, Rasburicase's role, and its key points:

Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS):

  • Occurs when cancer cells rapidly break down and die due to treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy [1].
  • This breakdown releases large amounts of uric acid, a waste product, into the bloodstream.
  • High uric acid levels can overwhelm the kidneys and lead to serious complications like kidney failure [1, 2].

How Rasburicase Works:

  • Rasburicase is an enzyme that specifically breaks down uric acid into a more soluble form that can be easily eliminated by the kidneys [1, 2].
  • By lowering uric acid levels, Rasburicase helps prevent complications associated with TLS.

When is Rasburicase Used?

  • It's primarily used to prevent TLS in patients with certain types of cancer, especially those at high risk of developing the condition [1, 2]. These may include cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, and some types of advanced solid tumors.
  • In some cases, it might also be used to treat established TLS [2].

Benefits of Rasburicase:

  • Reduces the risk of developing kidney failure and other complications associated with TLS [1, 2].
  • May improve overall outcomes for cancer patients undergoing treatment that can trigger TLS [2].

Important Considerations:

  • Rasburicase is typically administered intravenously (through a vein) by a healthcare professional [2].
  • It may not be suitable for everyone. Your doctor will assess your individual situation and the risks of TLS before prescribing Rasburicase [2].
  • Potential side effects include fever, chills, nausea, and allergic reactions [2].
  • Regular monitoring of uric acid levels and kidney function is necessary while receiving Rasburicase [2].
