Sodium propionate

International Numbering System (INS) for Food Additives: 281

Food additives Europe numbers: E281

Sodium propionate is a preservative used in food products. It is a salt which is the sodium salt of propionic acid. It is used in many processed foods, such as breads, cheeses, processed meats, and baked goods, to prevent the growth of mold, yeast, and bacteria. It also helps to retain the quality, color, and freshness of food. Sodium propionate has no known adverse health effects when used in food products and is recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Sodium propionate is a substance with various applications, but in the medical field, it has two main uses:

  1. Food Preservative: This is the more common application of sodium propionate in the food industry. It acts as a preservative in certain processed foods, particularly baked goods and cheeses. However, its role in medicine is derived from this property.
  2. Antifungal Agent (Topical): Due to its ability to inhibit the growth of mold and some fungi, sodium propionate can be found in some topical antifungal medications applied to the skin. Here are some examples:
    • Antifungal creams for athlete's foot or jock itch: These medications might combine sodium propionate with other antifungal ingredients like calcium propionate or clotrimazole for a broader spectrum of action.
    • Nail fungus treatment: Some topical nail lacquers or solutions used for onychomycosis (fungal nail infections) might contain sodium propionate along with other antifungal agents.

Important Considerations:

  • Limited Use as Topical Antifungal: While sodium propionate exhibits antifungal properties, it's not always the first-line treatment for fungal skin infections. Other medications might be more effective depending on the specific type of fungus and the severity of the infection.
  • Potential for Irritation: Sodium propionate can sometimes cause mild skin irritation, especially in people with sensitive skin. It's important to follow application instructions carefully and discontinue use if irritation develops.
