Udenafil

Udenafil is an oral phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor approved by the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) in 2007 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Udenafil is a structural analog of the active ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil, and is marketed as Zydena by Dong-A Pharmaceutical in South Korea. Udenafil has a longer half-life than sildenafil and is primarily metabolised in the liver by CYP3A4, with a smaller contribution from the CYP2C9 isoenzyme. Udenafil is available as film-coated tablets in dosages of 50, 75, and 100 mg.

Udenafil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult males. Here's a breakdown of its key aspects:

Therapeutic Use:

  • Treats erectile dysfunction (impotence), the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Udenafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
  • During sexual arousal, the body releases nitric oxide (NO), which triggers the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the penis. cGMP relaxes smooth muscles in the corpus cavernosum (spongy tissue in the penis), allowing blood to flow in and fill the chambers, resulting in an erection.
  • Udenafil works by inhibiting PDE5, an enzyme that breaks down cGMP. By preventing this breakdown, udenafil helps maintain higher levels of cGMP, leading to improved blood flow and a firmer erection.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Udenafil comes in tablet form and is typically taken orally around 1 hour before sexual activity.
  • The recommended dose can vary depending on individual factors, so it's crucial to follow your doctor's instructions.

Important Considerations:

  • Udenafil will only help achieve an erection with sexual stimulation; it doesn't directly cause one.
  • It can cause side effects, including flushing, headache, indigestion, nasal congestion, and dizziness.
  • Udenafil can interact with certain medications, especially nitrates used for heart conditions. It's vital to disclose your entire medication history to your doctor before using udenafil.
  • People with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, severe liver or kidney problems, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, may not be suitable candidates for udenafil.
