Apoplexy

Apoplexy is an outdated term that is used to describe a stroke. It is derived from the Greek word “apoplexia”, which means “struck down”. A stroke is a medical emergency caused by a disruption of blood flow to the brain. It can be caused by a blocked artery or a burst blood vessel in the brain. When this happens, the brain cells in the affected area die from lack of oxygen, leading to a wide range of symptoms, from paralysis to speech difficulties. The seriousness of the stroke depends on the size and location of the blocked or burst vessel, as well as the amount of time it takes to get medical help. Treatment for a stroke typically includes medications to improve circulation and reduce swelling in the brain, as well as physical and occupational therapy to help patient regain lost skills.
