Delirium

Delirium is a state of disturbed consciousness characterized by confusion, impaired attention, and disorientation. It is often associated with a sudden onset and fluctuating course, and is one of the most common symptoms of an acute medical or psychiatric problem. Delirium can be caused by a variety of physical and psychological illnesses, including infection, trauma, metabolic disturbances, drug intoxication and withdrawal, and alcohol abuse. Common signs and symptoms of delirium include disorientation, disorganized thinking, restlessness, agitation, memory impairment, and hallucinations. Treatment of delirium often involves identification and management of the underlying cause, as well as supportive measures such as physical restraints and sedation.
