Sciatica
Sciatica is a term used to describe pain radiating from the lower back to the buttocks and down the leg. It is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs through the lower back, buttocks and leg. Symptoms can include sharp pain or a burning sensation, tingling, muscle weakness or numbness. Sciatica is typically worse when sitting or lying down and is relieved when standing or walking. The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disk. This occurs when a disk in the spine becomes damaged or weakened and the inner material is forced out, compressing the sciatic nerve. Other causes can include spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, or a tumor or cyst pressing on the nerve. Treatment for sciatica depends on the underlying cause. Generally, it involves a combination of medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes. In some cases, surgery may be recommended.
