Emphysema
Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that damages the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. It is a progressive disease that makes it increasingly difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, leading to a decrease in oxygen levels in the body. Symptoms of emphysema include shortness of breath, a chronic cough, wheezing, chest tightness, and a chronic productive cough. The main cause of emphysema is smoking, but it can also be caused by long-term exposure to air pollution, occupational dust, and fumes. Treatment for emphysema includes medications, lifestyle changes, and surgery.
