Goiter

A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. It is usually seen as a swelling in the front of the neck, although it can go undetected if it is small. Goiters can be caused by a variety of factors, including iodine deficiency, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications. The most common type of goiter is a diffuse goiter, which is an enlargement of the entire thyroid gland. Other types of goiters include nodular goiters, which are caused by lumps or nodules in the thyroid, and multinodular goiters, which are caused by multiple nodules in the thyroid. Treatment for goiters depends on the underlying cause, but can include dietary changes, medication, or surgery.
