Tribulus terrestris (Zygophyllaceae) is a procumbent annual or perennial herb with many spreading slender branches, the immature portions covered in a fine silky hair. It is commonly known as Caltrops, Puncture vine and it is distributed throughout tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. Literature survey reveals the presence of Harman, chlorogenin, diosgenin and its acetate, furostanol glycoside, spirosterol saponin and a dihydroxy spirosteroidal sapogenin, saponins C & G, kaempferol, kaempferol-3-glucoside, kaempferol-3-rutinoside, kaempferol-3-b-D- (6”-p-coumaroyl) - glucoside, glucose, amino acids, alkaloids harmine, harmaline, harman and gitogenin in hydrolysed extracts of fruits, roots and leaves. Plant is used as Diuretic.

Chota Gokhru (T. terrestris) The biological active compounds are the alkaloid – Harman and Harmine; the Saponin – Sapogenin, Chlorogenin and Ruscogenin; the Glucosides – Tribuloside and Kaempferol. There are also plenty of resins, reducing sugars, tannins, pero-oxidase and diastase enzymes.

Ethnopharmacology use

  • Mucilaginous water extract of the whole plant is taken as a ·remedy for impotency. 
  • Ash of the whole plant is good for external application in rheumatism. 
  • Leaves are used as a paste in the treatment of stones in bladder.
  • Decoction of leaves is useful as a gargle for mouth trouble, painful gums and to reduce inflammation. 
  • Roots are said to be appetiser, diuretic, carminative and anti-inflammatory. 
  • Decoction of fruit is used as diuretic, demulcent, aphrodisiac and also as tonic. 
  • It is also used in treating calculous affections and painful micturition and other kidney diseases.
